The celebration of the Winter Solstice stems from ancient times, with humans observing this seasonal milestone in many cultures across the globe, having created spiritual and cultural traditions to celebrate the longest night of the year. Northey Street City Farm have been celebrating the Winter Solstice for over 20 years with an annual festival of live music, dancing, talks and workshops for all ages, yummy food, a lantern parade and of course a mesmerising bonfire.

In 2019, their main stage will host a range of live music, with local band Tin Star, singer songwriter Mark Moroney, the funky Formidable Vegetable Sound System, and Sunny Coast band Bearfoot, rocking out some fine beats to groove to. You’ll also get the chance to join others in voice at our Big Singing Workshop before joining a community jam with over 50 African drums and some high energy African Dancing.

In their education precinct, their sustainable living educational talks and workshops will cover a broad array of topics from Micro Gardening and Ethical Investment, to ideas on how to retrofit suburbia and how to create more opportunities for kids to play in nature. With 16 talks in 4 hours across 4 tents, covering topics across Organic Gardening, Earth Care, People Care and Fair Share, there will be plenty to feed your brain with.

They also have a great Family Space that runs all afternoon with loads of Earth Arts and Upcycled Art activities for the kids and teens, lantern making workshops for all and opportunities for the kids to build forts and play games while mum and dad chill out on the grass. Their Solstice Ceremony, Lantern Parade and Bonfire will kick off after sunset, so the kids can join in the fun.

The festival will be zero waste as usual! So come prepared with your own water bottle, keeper cup, plate, bowl, cutlery. If you forget or need to travel light, there will be crockery and cutlery available to hire for a gold coin fee.

There will be something for everybody at this great annual event!

This is a family-friendly, alcohol and drug-free event. Sorry, no pets.
