“We watch, we listen, and we remember.
The past is already written, the ink is dry -
They have no idea what’s going to happen“
April is coming. The 40-second trailer for Game of Thrones Season 6 has finally been released by HBO, and while 24 words are said, the flash of images speak volumes. Blink, and you’ll miss it.
The montage revisits the last five seasons, starting with Jon Snow looking back at Hardhome before returning to the present as Olly stabs him to then give way to Ned Stark’s beheading, Yoren pressing Arya into his stomach to prevent her from seeing her father’s death throes, Lady Catylen Stark’s throat being cut and Arya’s eyes filling with blindness as Jaqen H'ghar looks on. This is followed by a wilding slashing at a wight with an axe; Joffrey’s death throes; Rob falling to his knees at The Red Wedding; Kingslayer Jamie Lannister recoiling in horror at the fall of the axe onto his right wrist, the three eyed crow, Khaleesi Danerys stretched out along the rocks overlooking the Dothraki Sea with Drogon, Craster’s last born son turning into a White Walker at the touch of the Night’s King, Jojen Reed dead in the snow with the Children of the Forest bombing Zombie Skeletons, wights churning through the battlements of Hardhome, Cersei bitch-face resting with cropped hair, Little Finger kissing Sanza as the snow falls on the Ayrie, the melting down of Ice, the Night King’s upraised palms as he resurrects the dead wildings and the blood of Jon Snow staining the white ground culminating in Bran Stark’s warg eyes rolling back into his head. Yep. Blink and you miss it.
WHAT THE TRAILER SHOWS
Noticeably absent from the trailer are: Tyrion. Stannis. Melisandre. Margarey. Brienne. Varys. Bronn. Samwell. Podrick. Hodor.
The trailer does introduce the iconic voice of Max von Sydow as the Three Eyed Crow who - according to rampant rumours - has a small but significant role in the series. Swedish-French actor Max von Sydow from THE EXORCIST, JUDGE DREDD, MINORITY REPORT and the upcoming STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS is a new addition to the show alongside Ian McShane, who too is to be confirmed for a yet-to-be-released but pivotal character. Still, the Three Eyed Raven is clearly important.
What the trailer also strongly indicates it that it’s all about Jon Snow. He is far from dead. He is so not dead - which we wrote about previously when the promo poster was released here - he might be resurrected or might not stay dead forever.
The feature of the dead Starks implies the Northern family may find redemption or revenge beyond the grave. Let’s hope so. Pretty sure we like the Starks. And their direwolves.
Neddard’s sword Ice is still around. Among the few Valyrian swords in the world able to kill the white walkers, Ice has been smelted into two swords but clearly shows it’s still an important part of the storyline.
And Bran Stark is warging while implying we don’t actually know what we think we do. And he’s right. Now that ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ books end on the same suspense of the TV series, readers and series watchers are on an equal footing for the first time – meaning, we don’t know what the heck is going to happen. AND THAT REALLY CUTS. But not deeper than swords.
BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE
HBO celebrated its upcoming 2016 season, reflecting on 2015 and the new shows to come, as well as a bit of a teaser for Game Of Thrones - which can be viewed around the 2.15 mark
Cersei is shown hugging Tommen with her hair still cropped short, Ramsay former Snow now Bolton is looking characteristically evil and Khaleesei is looking AOK. Clearly Cersei is preparing to face trial for all the nasty bad incestuous wicked things she has done. Ramsay has to pay for what he’s done to Sanza (if we read the book, he’s not past a bit of bestiality either, but let’s hope that never hits the TV screens) and Daenerys of House Targaryen, The Unburnt, Queen of the Andals, the Rhoynar, and of the First Men, Queen of Meereen, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, Breaker of Chains and Mother of Dragons is certainly not dead at the hands of all the Dothraki when we left her by the Dothraki Sea.
NEW PLOT DEVELOPMENT: WHO IS JON SNOW’S MOTHER?
From a recent conference, Director David Benioff related that George RR Martin has given the directing team a certain license with the TV Series. There were serious implications that this meant we will find out who Jon Snow’s mother is, which also means a serious plot development for Game Of Thrones on the whole. GoT Fan Robbie McD has put together this sensational 8 minute compilation supporting the theory of T + L = J as Jon Snow being of Targaryen blood and not Ned Stark’s bastard. Which further goes to show it's still all about Jon Snow.
Yes. April is coming. But not soon enough.
