Amber Denny | 04 November 2015

From her Diary of A Secret Hospo Worker, Amber Denny loves a good laugh, a good time and a good drink (or seven).

It only takes one footstep inside the room to feel the buzz in the air and get a taste - so to speak - of what’s to come. A glance to the left reveals a bustling laneway with stall after stall offering tasters of Cuvees, Rieslings or Chiantis. A glance to the right and gaze upon Artisan Square to find fine products such as truffle infused oil and individually crafted chocolate treats while getting to know the history behind the brands. The atmosphere was well and truly alive at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre with a constant hum of excitement from stall holders and visitors alike. The Good Food & Wine Show is a brilliant showcase of local produce, ingenious products, and culinary talent. There is no better opportunity to be immersed in the many different flavours while discovering something fresh and new.

The Good Food Theatre
Spanning one end of the room, The Good Food Theatre hosted celebrity chefs such as Sarah Wilson, Miguel Maestre or George Calombaris; all sharing their tips and tricks in the kitchen while cooking up a storm for the crowd. At the opposite end was the Laucke Creative Kitchen with live demonstrations of dishes such as chilli salt snapper and salted caramel tart. 2011 My Kitchen Rules winner Sammy Jakubiak could be seen at these demonstrations, chatting to the crowd and talking them through the cooking process.

Logan City Council Stall
MasterchefPoh Ling Yeow could also be spotted periodically throughout the day from the Logan City Council stall, preparing tasty dishes using locally grown and fresh ingredients. Nearby the Laucke Creative Kitchen was Tucker’s Natural Cheese Alley - which may well have been the second busiest area of the whole show since Granite Belt Wine Country was obviously the first. This section of the room was bursting with displays full of any kinds of cheese imaginable and all looking mouth-watering. From a sharp crumbly blue finished off with sweet quince paste to hand-churned butter, all dairy desires were met in Cheese Alley. One does not simply turn down triple cream brie!

Artisans Corner
The presence of both cheese and wine are a pretty sure bet at the Good Food & Wine show, and while they are definitely the stars of the event, there were some rather unique and delightful products to be found tucked around every corner. North Queensland boutique distillery Sarina Sugar Shed brought along a variety of relishes, chutneys and other condiments, accompanied by a rather delectable mango rum liqueur along with their signature dark rum. If a caffeine buzz is more the going style, not more than a few yards away lingered the all-too-familiar scent of ground coffee beans, emanating from the stall of Mr Black – a cold drop coffee liqueur that nearly tastes too good to be true.

Although, it’s not all about the booze (or is it) from the Dan Murphy Discovery Zone, mixed in with the varying aromas and clinking of wine glasses are some rather handy inventions to boost the culinary repertoire. One such product in particular aroused the curiosities with its simple design yet brilliant effect: the Dumpling Cube. The brightly coloured device moulded and sealed small sheets of pastry around all kinds of fillings while leaving a scalloped effect around the edges, ready for frying or boiling. No doubt this invention would be a sure fire hit for impressing guests at the next dinner party.

Noosh Catering
After emerging from a full day with full stomachs, bags packed with goodies and mind bursting with fresh ideas, this experience means marking it in the calendar for the following year.
