Celebrating Australia Day should be a little more sophisticated than slathering yourself in green and gold zinc and doing burnouts in a ute. Whether you want to spend Australia Day in the summer sun or underneath an air-conditioner, we’ve got you covered with the 7 best ways to celebrate Australia Day.

Day trip to the beach
Take a trip up the coast to either Redcliffe, Noosa or Caloundra and head to the beach to catch some waves. Make sure that you bring along a picnic basket that’s bursting with Pavlova, Vegemite sandwiches, lamingtons, meat pies and fairy bread.

Have a pool party
If your trusty Holden Commodore can’t get you to a beach, stay at home and have a paddle in your pool…or the neighbours. Fetch some water pistols and pool noodles, and you’re all set.

Watch the Australia Day fireworks display
Bring a picnic blanket and some snacks, set yourself up on the River Quay at South bank and take in some live music from local musicians before the fireworks display at 7:30pm. You won’t want to miss it!

Go for a bushwalk
Australia can boast some pretty impressive flora and fauna, so it makes sense to get out there and appreciate it. Get your walking boots on, grab a water bottle and retreat into the bush for the day. Mt Coot-tha and Lamington National Park boast some fantastic walking tracks, but be sure to keep an eye out for drop bears!

Play some beach/backyard sport
It’s always fun to play some beach footy or backyard cricket with your mates. Reapply your sunscreen and spray on some Aerogard - your inner Shane Warne is about to be awoken.

Have a barbeque
Get some snags, burgers, potato salad and fried onions, and you’re all set for an amazing arvo BBQ. Don’t forget to stock up your esky with plenty of cold bevvies.

Watch some iconic Australian films
Let’s be realistic, sometimes it’s too hot to go outside and play backyard cricket with your mates. Feel free to stay inside with the fan on full blast, curl up on the couch and catch up on your favourite Australian films and TV shows. Recommended films include Strictly Ballroom, The Babadook, Muriel’s Wedding, and The Dressmaker.
