Arm the confetti cannon and break out your bedazzler, because MELT is just over a month away and promises a delicious bag of all sorts ranging from dazzling performances to provocative discussions. The 2019 program is an unforgettable line-up of close to 35 productions and events that will inject both sparkle and substance into Brisbane Powerhouse when it returns for its fifth year. Here are the top shows with sequins, songs AND substance:

Reuben Kaye
7:30pm, Thursday July 4
Cabaret superstar Reuben Kaye is what happens when you tell your children they can be anything. In an explosion of energy, high camp, filthy humour and a voice that leaves you nailed to the back of the theatre, Reuben Kaye dominates the stage and devours his audience. With an acid wit and casual sensationalism that is simply delicious, Kaye is a dazzling phantasm of anachronistic showbiz – an explosion of sequins, lashes and teeth.

YANK!
Thursday July 4 - Sunday July 14
Based on the true, hidden history of gay soldiers during World War II, and billed as the musical Rodgers and Hammerstein never wrote, this Australian premiere love story, explores what it means to fall in love and struggle to survive, in a time and place where the odds are stacked against you. Paying homage to 1940s Hollywood romance films, Yank! will capture audience hearts and emotions. This is a show not to be missed!

Giantess
Thursday July 4 - Saturday July 6
Created by the multi-award-winning comedian Cassie Workman, Giantess is a story of self-acceptance. Interweaving music, comedy, storytelling and illustration, Cassie’s one-person-show explores the anguish of coming to terms with a gender identity that doesn’t match your body.

Met Gala Comedy
7:30pm, Sunday June 30
It’s the ultimate variety night full of flamboyant comedy and fun! From musical and sketch comedy to stand up the inaugural MELT Comedy Gala will feature queer comedy legends and newbies dishing up non-stop laughs. Be part of history and join us for this first ever MELT laugh-fest extravaganza – with a touch of glitter and glam thrown in for good measure!

William Yang: Gay Sydney a Memoir
5:30pm, Sunday July 7
Born and raised in Queensland, William Yang is one of Australia’s greatest storytellers, a prolific photographer and a performer of monologues with stunning slide projections. Be taken on a personal journey exploring William’s involvement in the gay movement in Sydney. Through his camera lens and words, explore the heady and turbulent scenes of Sydney in the 1970s, the AIDS pandemic in the early nineties, the history of the Mardi Gras since 1978 and the recent marriage equality struggle.

Dolly Diamond's Bl*nkety Bl*nks 
8pm, Saturday June 29
It’s variety, comedy and live entertainment at its best – or definitely at its funniest! Everyone’s favourite game show hostess, Dolly Diamond hosts the live version of the top-rating Australian 70’s TV classic with a line-up of celebrity guests that will throw caution to the wind to assist contestants to win fabulous prizes! With her sharp-tongued wit and comedic genius, Queen of Cabaret Dolly Diamond is completely in her element with this naughty game show that is just a little bit risqué and definitely filled with innuendo.

Killer Queens
7:30pm, Friday July 5
Five ferocious females ascend the glam rock throne embracing the exaggerated pomp of prog rock and heavy metal, as well as vaudevillian music hall complete with tight shorts, leather and leotards. The KILLER QUEENS embody one of greatest queer characters in contemporary culture, featuring exhilarating new arrangements of some of Queen’s biggest hits as well as a few original infusions from other Glam Rock Royals like Bowie and Prince.

La Silhouette
6:30pm, Thursday June 27 - Sunday June 30
La Silhouette is a cabaret club; a maze of mirages where myriad, mysterious shapes pull you into dark corners and hidden rooms. Here, the shape of Brisbane’s queer history is brought to life by eight people whose spirits suffer all, celebrate all and endure all across decades of hiding, rioting and retribution. An immersive performance that shines a light on the past and into the future.

Baby Bi Bi Bi, Brisbane Powerhouse
Friday July 5 - Sunday July 7
A wickedly funny, often filthy cabaret about being a bisexual woman complete with entirely original music. Baby Bi Bi Bi explores the questions we are still asking ourselves and the questions we wish Brent Dongus would stop asking us at parties. Because when you like your men like you like your women… sometimes people need a little clarification.

I Love Gay, Brisbane Powerhouse
9pm, Thursday June 27 - Saturday June 29
Join us in a salute the most fabulous flag of them all! Ruby Slippers and Joel Devereux present I LOVE GAY, a showcase to entertain and celebrate the fierce fighting spirit of our nearest and queerest. Scandalous drag! Gender-bending feats of strength! Dancing girls and prancing boys! DO ask and DO tell with this eclectic cast of some of Australasia’s most flamboyant homos in this gay call to arms of the Queer army. Whether you’re pulling rank, digging the trenches, or a bit or both, I LOVE GAY want YOU to pledge allegiance to the rainbow flag.
